Sam Gare

Bio:

Sam Gare’s approach depicts the wild landscapes from which modern urban lifestyles are increasingly disconnected. As the consequences of the ever increasing encroachment of “civilization” on nature begins to seriously show it’s scars on the wild, her work raise’s awareness of conservation and the importance to protect and respect the wilderness. Sam’s work shares the positive power of the wild on the human spirit and soul.

Driven by a lifelong passion for nature, she frequently travels to isolated environments to inform her work, creating both in the studio and outdoors in the field. This combines with her delicate linework techniques to echo the documentative approaches of past explorers James Cook and Joseph Banks, whose artistic and cartographic collections Gare worked with at the Natural History Museum, the Royal Horticultural Society and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Sam has developed her practice as a self-taught artist, refocusing her interest in visual storytelling to the two-dimensional. Gare’s work has been included in several solo and group exhibitions, including “Might”, “Wild Giants” and “Vanishing Point” at the Curious Duke Gallery, London (2017, 2016 and 2015); Alpine Garden Show, RHS Horticultural Halls (2014); “Free Painters and Sculptors: Without Boundaries”, Menier Gallery (2013).

Before her artistic career, Gare established a strong career in events directing the Affordable Art Fairs, Battersea Spring and Bristol (2016 - 2018), and as Deputy Show Manager for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (2013 - 2016).

Gare is an ambassador for the Wilderness Foundation UK and the joint founder of the Wilderness Art Collective. She also supports the charity Bloodwise, fundraising through her “Might” solo show (2017).

Gare currently lives and works in South London, England.
