Bio:
My paintings are part of my journey that allow me to express my experiences in life. Sometimes life makes you think, reflect and come to realisations. My work reflects thoughts, lessons learned or experiences, the way I feel about things. They always begin with a core feeling which I try and express through the creative process.
As I am a self-taught artist I have spent a lot of time researching and experimenting with materials to learn how to create the effects that I desire. I like to experiment and explore using different media and aim to always be evolving my work into new something new. I have always been fascinated with colour and find oil paint an amazing medium for colour expression. I like to play with the different opacities of paint through fine layering, drips, flicks and splotches: a multitude of marks that can be used to convey emotion. I also work with the notion of “take away” where I may use turpentine to completely wipe away areas of the canvas, or I pour enamel paint over acrylics where I to want to mask things. I think this process of creating hidden layers, gives the painting an original authenticity, as it can never be replicated and only exists because of all that preceded it.
I recently started incorporating the written word in my work, offering a more explicit meaning, yet there is always an interplay between what those words mean to me and its interpretation by the viewer, which really interests me. To me, my work is an act of imperfect expression and continued discovery.
