Miguel Sopena

Bio:

Miguel Sopena is originally from València, Spain, but is now based in Croydon, South London.

Miguel's path to becoming an artist has definitely been non-traditional, having felt the pull of art as he came close to completing his doctorate in theoretical Physics at Sussex University in Southern England. He combined writing his thesis with a 2-year, part-time Foundation course at Brighton City College, an intensive, hands-on experience that proved revelatory. Seeking to acquire a grounding in art, Miguel enrolled on a 2-year, atelier-style portraiture diploma at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London, where he learnt about traditional oil painting and the human figure.

An eclectic and highly experimental artist, Miguel started working in an abstract language soon after graduation in 2015. Miguel's painting practice is now mainly abstract, and explores themes of memory, identity, and the passage of time, with special attention to composition, colour, and the materiality of the media he works with.

Miguel has established a solid track record of exhibiting as well as participating in international residences. After past experimental solo shows (London 2017, Istanbul 2018) and many group exhibitions, his last solo show of abstract work ran at the Stone Space in East London in December 2022/January 2023.

Miguel’s work can be found in public and private collections in the UK and internationally.
